Are You Keeping Good Oral Hygiene Habits?

We have always been taught that brushing in the morning and at night will help keep our teeth healthy. Unfortunately, our oral health needs more attention than just twice a day. If you do not have good oral hygiene practices, you may be leaving gaps in the day that will allow bacteria to wreak havoc in your mouth.

Although regular checkups and cleanings with your dentist, Dr. Harvey Seybold, Dr. Peter Chang, or Dr. Irbad Chowdhury, here at Roselle Dental Center in Roselle, IL, will certainly help keep your mouth healthy, the rest of the time, it’s up to you to maintain optimum oral health.

Brushing and Flossing

When it comes to good oral hygiene practices, it is not a choice between brushing or flossing. It should be a combination of both. However, brushing is not just brushing and flossing is not simply flossing. What does this mean? More important than the act of brushing is the technique that you use to effectively clean your teeth and gums.

Having a poor brushing technique is as good as not brushing. So how should you brush?

  • Move the toothbrush in a gentle and circular movement to remove plaque.
  • Make sure that your brush’ soft-bristles are at a 45-degree angle to your gum.
  • Take at least two minutes to brush your entire mouth.
  • Focus on the inner, outer, and chewing surfaces of your teeth.
  • Always brush before going to bed to remove plaque and germ buildup during the day.
  • Clean your toothbrush properly and replace it immediately once worn out.

As far as flossing is concerned, it should be treated as important as brushing. Neglecting to floss after brushing can leave bits and pieces of food between your teeth, which can cause cavities. Did you know that flossing also stimulates the gums, lowers gum inflammation, and reduces plaque? You can get these benefits by flossing at least once daily after you brush.

Are you aware that aside from hosting bacteria, plaque could also buildup on your tongue? Neglecting to clean your tongue could result in bad breath and a host of other potential oral problems. Clean your tongue by gently brushing it after you clean your teeth. You can even find some toothbrushes that have a built-in tongue scraper to make it easier and more efficient to remove bacteria and freshen breath.

Practicing all these from home will give you a good oral hygiene routine. But, the only person who can confirm if you are keeping good oral hygiene practices is your dentist in Roselle, IL. So schedule regular visits with your dentist.
